C. Caerphilly Castle
Built in the late 13th century by Gilbert De Clare, this castle was an attempt by Norman rulers to subdue the Welsh. De Clare flooded a valley to create a 30-acre lake and setting his fortress on 3 artificial islands. Surrounded with a double circuit of walls and 4 gatehouses, one of which could be used as a final refuge if all other defences failed. Restored by the Marquis of Bute early this century. Caerphilly Castle is located on Castle Street in Caerphilly.
Following the Wednesday afternoon excursions, at around 5.30pm delegates gathered to further sample Welsh hospitality at the Three Horseshoes Public House and Forge Restaurant. This country pub is situated approximately 30 minutes from Cardiff City Centre.
