The Wood Protection Research Group of Research Institute of Wood Industry, Chinese Academy of Forestry (WPRG@CAF) was established in January 1, 1953, which is the first scientific research institution to carry out wood preservation research in China. Through the efforts of several generations of scientists, remarkable achievements have been made in more than 60 years.

More than 100 scientific research projects on wood protection have been conducted, 8 national, provincial and ministerial awards have been achieved, 19 scientific research achievements have been identified, 24 Chinese patents have been patented, more than 11 books and 400 papers have been published, 23 important Chinese national and industrial standards in the field of wood protection have been formulated and published.

At present, the members of WPRG@CAF include 1 senior research chemist (Dr Mingliang Jiang), 1 senior wood scientist (Dr Yuzhang Wu), 1 phytopathologist (Dr Xingxia Ma) and 3 chemists (Dr Wei Qu, Dr Jingpeng Zhang and Dr Bin Zhang).

Our vision is to enhance the performance and durability of wood and bamboo products service by using environmentally friendly methods, including:

• Development of highly efficient wood preservative system
• Development of new water repellents and process approach
• Wood structure protection of ancient buildings
• Wood combustion and smoke analyses
• Design and develop new fire retardants for wood and wood-based materials

WPRG@CAF has wood preservation and flame retardant testing Laboratory, wood preservative chemistry and biological laboratory and field stake test sites in Beijing and Guangzhou, which can provide preservative analysis, durability and flame retardant performance testing for the industries.

Laboratory Testing

Wood preservatives: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 27654-2011 Wood preservative.
Specification for preservative treated wood: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 27651-2011, Use category and specification for preservative treated wood.
Analytical method of wood preservatives: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 23229-2009 Methods for analysis of waterborne wood preservatives and GB/T 33021-2016 Analytical method for organic wood preservatives—Triazoles and benzimidazole.

Leachability: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 29905-2013 Laboratory method of determining the leachability of wood preservatives.

Laboratory mildew test: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 18261-2013 Test method for anti-mildew agents in controlling wood mould and stain fungi.

Laboratory decay test: According to Chinese Standard, LY/T 1283-2011 Laboratory test method of toxicity of wood preservatives to decaying fungi.

Field stake test: According to Chinese Standard, GB/T 27655-2011 Method of evaluating wood preservatives by field tests with stakes.

Flammability test: The burning properties of wood-based materials are characterized according to GB/T 16172-2007 or ISO 5660-1:2015. The smoke can be tested on the line based on the cone calorimeter coupled to FTIR apparatus.
