At the height of his career, Dr. Tsuyoshi Yoshimura, Professor at the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere, Kyoto University, died on May 18, 2021 at the age of 60. His accomplishments cover a wide range of fields.

Dr. Yoshimura was a pioneer in the field of termite control, and his research efforts were focused on changing the way of thinking about termite control in the era of a sustainable global environment. As part of this effort, he contributed to the development of a new termite control system that utilizes the interaction between termites and microorganisms, and to the establishment of a comprehensive termite control system that integrates the latest basic knowledge of termite feeding ecology with new findings.

Professor Yoshimura accomplished a great many achievements related to biodeterioration. He conducted many biological, physiological and ecological studies on wood-deteriorating organisms, especially on termites. He also evaluated the performance of many termiticides, preservatives and materials for termite control. Furthermore, he had surveyed biodiversity of termites and wood-decaying fungi in tropical plantation forests and energy generation from termites.
